| 11/22/04 Kindergarten Class November 22, 2004 Hello Kindergarten Families! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Sorry I didn't write any notes for our last day before the break. It was basically a celebration all day long! In Science they did actually learn some science stuff :-) ! They talked about the root systems of vegetables. They looked at different vegetables with the roots still attached. They made book marks using the purple and yellow onion skin juices and beet juice. Sounds like fun! We have finished books A and B of Explode the Code and are entering book C with the letter C! I have an extra book C for anyone who is following along with the books and would like to buy it off me for $3.00 as opposed to the regular $5.95 price. Just let me know! December the 13th we will not do a letter for it will be the Christmas Party Day. We will basically be doing Christmas stuff and the show and tell will center around Christmas type things. For our story I will try and find my book about the candy cane and the meanings behind it. I try to stay away from the Santa Claus thing myself. If your child wants to bring a Santa something for show- and-tell that is fine. And the last two weeks of December there will be no BHSE so it will be a short month! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11/15/04 THE LETTER OF THE DAY for November 22, 2004 Sorry I didn't mention it before. There is NO letter of the day. It will be a THANKSGIVING DAY only. For show and tell they can bring something that reminds them of Thanksgiving, something Fall-ish, or something with Thanksgiving colors. Sound good? Don't forget to read my notes on the day. There is some important information in there. Thanks and I'll see you (or your child) on Monday!! What a fun day it will be! Lori Hill 11/15/04 Kindergarten - MUSIC Class: We practiced for next week's concert today. Most students did great, but there are a few that are still struggling with the words to "My Country 'Tis of Thee." After practicing we played some music games outside. Music games are an excellent way to reinforce beat and rhythm. Let me also say this - if you student has received or receives in the future a notice from me - don't panic. I would like to keep parents informed about their childs behavior so it does not become an ongoing problem, not because it already is a pattern. Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com November 15, 2004 Kindergarten - SPANISH Class: We are working on classroom objects at the moment and recognizing questions. If you would like to help at home - here are the objects we studied today: table - la mesa (may - sah) chair - la silla (see - yah) door - la puerta (poo - air - tah) window - la ventana (ven - tah - nah) pencil - el lapiz (lah - peas) Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com 11/15/04 A Day in BHSE Kindergarten November 15, 2004 First Period - Science with Mrs. Powell They discussed the Indian participation in the Thanksgiving feast. They talked about corn and that (according to several books) the Indians provided popcorn. They tasted cornbread and Mrs. Powell sent home recipes for Navaho fry bread and Indian cornbread. They talked about cranberries and how they grow in cranberry bogs. They tasted cranberry bread. They also made book markers by dying the cloth and dipping one end in cranberry juice and the other end in blueberry juice. Boy what a class! Second Period - Art with Lori Hill and Cheryl Carmack It's costume making time! The kids painted (with washable markers so don't wash them!) pictures on their Indian clothing. We talked about the kind of pictures the Indians would draw. We also put some beads on the tassels we cut in the sleeves. Cheryl and I will finish them this week. And to those who weren't there, we'll go ahead and do it all for them so they will have a complete costume next week. Next week we will paint stripes on their cheeks. Please talk to your child and tell them that it is okay. I've done a lot of face painting at parties and these are safe paints. Third Period - Spanish and Music Class with Mrs. Lora Brown Lora likes to present her own notes Forth Period - Recess! And what a beautiful day it was!! The kids did not want to come in. Several children left their coats in the room at the end of class. I put them in the storage room. I'll try to remember to bring them back in the class next week so don't forget to look for them. I'm sure you will need them for Thanksgiving break! Fifth Period - Letter of the Day and Story Time! The kids did great in writing the letter /d/. The story we read was called "King Aaron and the Dinner Feast". Aaron Bell thought it was pretty neat that he had the same name as the King in the book! Sixth Period - Show and Tell / Snacks / Rest Time with the Magic School Bus Show and Tell was fun! So many /d/ words to show. My favorite one was Darius' , he brought himself! Snacks were great, we had Ding Dongs and drank them down with Sunny D! The Magic School Bus was on the art of flying. The boys sure loved that! > **Don't forget! You are welcome to come to the Thanksgiving feast! We start eating at 10:30 in the morning so don't fix them too big of a breakfast! Also, don't for get your camera! It will be lots of fun!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- November 8, 2004 Kindergarten - MUSIC Class: Today we watched part of a video called "Melody Time" while I took each student in the hall individually to assess their music knowledge. I am extremely pleased to report that everyone scored very well. In fact, everyone made either a perfect score or only missed one question. Here is what they were asked: 1. What does Forte mean? (loud) 2. What is the opposite of Forte? (piano) 3. What does vivace mean? (fast) 4. What does largo mean? (slow) 5. What is the musical word for loud? (Forte) - I threw this one in thinking it might stump some kids, but I didn't fool anyone! 6. Sing My Country 'Tis of Thee Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com November 8, 2004 Kindergarten - SPANISH Class: We continued to review colors and numbers and some classroom objects. Spanish seems to be the most difficult class for students. Many who don't know the answer make up something they think sounds cute and will make others laugh. It has been suggested that I provide parents with a study guide to help out. Below are the words and phrases they have been working on: colors - los colores red - rojo (row - ho) orange - anaranjado (ah-nah-ron-ha-doe) yellow - amarillo (ah-ma-ree-yo) green - verde (ver-day) blue - azul (ah-sool) purple - morado (mor-ah-doe) pink - rosa grey - gris (grease) black - negro (e sounds like the e in neck) white - blanco (blahn-ko) brown - cafe los numeros - numbers zero - cero one - uno two - dos three - tres four - cuatro (quatro) five - cinco six - seis seven - siete eight - ocho nine - nueve ten - diez (dies) door - la puerta table - la mesa chair - la silla (la see-ya) hello - hola good day - buenos dias good bye - adios How do you say ______ in Spanish? - Como se dice _______ in espanol I don't know - non lo so Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com 11/8/04 What We Did Today Mrs. Lori's Kindergarten Class November 8, 2004 First Period - Science with Mrs. Powell From the seed to the big Pumpkin, the life of Mr. Pumpkin. Sounds like after today's class with Mrs. Powell your child should know all about it! For an extra treat they were able to enjoy a muffin made from pumpkin! Second Period - Art Class with Cheryl Carmack Color, Cut, and Glue! We got to do all three today as we made some grassy place for our hippo to graze. The children were also able to finish an "H" book with lots of good H words in it. Third Period - Spanish and Music with Mrs. Lora Brown I believe her notes are below mine. Forth Period - Recess!! And what a beautiful day to have it in! Fifth Period - Letter of the Day and Story Time with Mrs. Lori Hill Boy did we have fun with this letter! So many words that start with the letter H and the letter is also an easy one to write! We traced our Hand and made a turkey out of it. Getting ready for the big day already! The Story today, "Handy Dandy Helpful Hal", told us how much of a help we can be around the house even if we are small! Our letter next week will be the letter "D". Sixth Period - Show and tell / Snacks / and Rest Time with Mrs. Lori Hill Show and tell was a lot of fun. The kids are so excited to show their H words! And snacks, what a treat! Scotty's Mommy made cookies in the shape of H's and hats. So clever and so delicious!! Thank you! During rest time we watched a Magic School Bus on how a motor works. Very interesting.....to the boys at least. *** IMPORTANT!! Amanda and Makayla's sheet to their Mom or Dad didn't get picked up so email me and let me know you get this message. Otherwise I'll probably call you. I need all parents to bring to class next week a large white men's undershirt. I want it to be big enough to slip over their clothes like a dress. We are going to be the Indians for the Thanksgiving feast. Next week we will make our Indian costumes. If you get a package with more than one undershirt in it; go ahead and bring them both (it might save the day for someone who forgot theirs). Thanks and have a great week!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11/01/04 Mrs. Lori's Kindergarten Class November 1, 2004 Period 1 - Science With Mrs. Powell Well, Mrs. Powell didn't give me her lesson plan for her class. From looking at the kids work it looked like they covered how God clothes the animals (feathers, fur...). Period 2 - Art with Cheryl Carmack We welcome back Cheryl from a leave of absence. Hope we weren't too hard on her knee. Thank you Lisa for filling in for her! Today we colored some pictures with "J" words on them and glued (and ate) some jelly beans onto a picture of a jar with Jelly Beans in it. Was fun and yummy! Period 3 - Spanish and Music with Mrs. Lora Brown She should give you her notes separately. Period 4 - Well, due to a "bad guy" on the loose, Recess was scooted back towards the end of the day. But we did get it in! Period 5 - The letter of the day was "J" and the kids did well on thinking of a lot of "J" words for me to draw on the board. James and Jessie were experts on that letter! In fact, our story today was called, "James to the Rescue!". A book about making friends with those who aren't quite like us. Period 6 - Show and Tell was a blast! So many "J" things to share with the class. Thanks to the Wilkersons we had a great snack of Juice and Cracker Jacks! We even had time to squeeze in "Magic School Bus" before the big gathering in the auditorium. So sorry that so many kids forgot to get their work for the day in all the confusion. I found a shirt and some socks that were left behind. I put them in the drawer under where you sign in if you believe one of those items belong to your child. Next week's letter is the letter "H". Have a great week!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ November 1, 2004 Kindergarten - MUSIC Class: Elections cut into part of our music time, but we were still able to practice "My Country 'Tis of Thee." We started a discussion on opposites in music, but I will not have a chance to assess their individual knowledge until next week. If you would like to help your child study for this assessment, here are the four terms they should know: Forte (four-tay) - Loud Piano - Soft (or quiet) Vivace (viv - ah - chay) - Fast Largo - Slow Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com November 1, 2004 Kindergarten - SPANISH Class: Parents, thank you for helping your child learn classroom behavior. There was a dramatic improvement in the class as a whole and because of that we were able to accomplish so much more. We are still reviewing colors, numbers, and classroom objects. I don't intend to go far beyond that point until they grasp these terms better. However, I am using them more in sentences. For example, instead of just asking how to say "door" in Spanish, I will ask a student to "open the door, please." Combining the terms they should know with these tasks will hopefully aid in their understanding of the language. Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10/25/04 Miss Lori's Kindergarten Class October 25, 2004 1st Period - Science Sorry most of you didn't get their science project. It was a real pretty tree with apples on it. I saw it on the floor and thought it belonged to a class that met a different day of the week. I don't know why I thought that! Oh well. Mrs. Powell did not give me her lesson plan so I don't know what they did. 2nd Period - Art They made a Night Owl wind sock from a brown grocery bag. Lisa also read them a story about a night owl and it's baby. We learned about what owls liked to eat. Yuk! 3rd Period - Music and Spanish Miss Lora will write you a note about what they covered. 4th Period - Recess! It was a beautiful day and the kids had a blast. I know our warm days are numbered. Remember to pack the kids a warm coat when the weather gets cooler so we all can still go outside to play. 5th Period - Letter of the Day "N" Besides our usual work sheet for the letter of the day, we also worked with Numbers. We put numbers in order from one to 10 and did a number coloring project. The book we read was a Sesame Street Book called "Nobody Wants to Play With Me". Next week's letter will be the letter "J". 6th Period - Show and Tell / Rest Time We had lots of N words for show and tell. We had Napkins, Noodles, Nickels, Nuts, a Necklace and more. James even gave each child a Nickel and Nut to take home. Thanks James! Magic School Bus today was on the Water Cycle. **Next week we will have a fire drill. Keep your eyes on the email for more details. Talk to your child about it before class so that he/she will understand what its all about. **Also everyone is meeting in the auditorium for the last half hour of the day for some special things planned for the kids. We'll see. Have a great week!! October 25, 2004 Kindergarten - MUSIC Class: Parents, today we had a very long discussion about how to behave in class. Music is a fun class and consequently can prove difficult for students who are not used to classroom situations. Today, however, there seemed to be too much "goofing off" and not enough learning, so we reviewed how to behave in class and what to do when others around you are not behaving. My advice was to ignore students who are cutting up in class as much as possible. I told them that they just wanted attention and if ignored, they were more likely to pay attention and have fun with the rest of us. Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com October 25, 2004 Kindergarten - SPANISH Class: Today we continued to review door (la puerta), chair (la silla), and table (la mesa). Next week we will add other classroom objects such as book, pencil, and paper to our Spanish vocabulary. Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10/18/04 Ms. Powell’s Science We are discussing the season and the study of different leaves, colors, and shapes. Four leaves were chosen and ironed by the teacher between two pieces of wax paper to preserve them. Third graders discussed edges, lobed, toothed, and smooth. October 18, 2004 Kindergarten - MUSIC Class: We learned an additional verse to "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and practiced standing still to sing it. We also practiced high/low, loud/soft, and fast/slow. We are still working on remembering the four tempo markings: largo (slow), andante (walking speed), allegro (quick and lively), and vivace (very fast). Note: November 8th concert has been moved to Thanksgiving event. Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com October 18, 2004 Kindergarten - SPANISH Class: We continued to review colors, numbers, and how to say our names. To that store of knowledge, we added the Spanish words to table, chair, and window. Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com 10/18 So, so, sorry for not posting the notes on the day on Tuesday like I usually do. Last week Diana was on vacation so no one could post to the web-site but this week I have another excuse. Monday during Enrichment classes my husband was in a car accident. He is alright but Tuesday morning the insurance person declared the car totaled, Tuesday afternoon I slipped, while trying to get my balance, on a small throw rug and flew into a corner in the wall. It split my skin, caused a lot of blood (which freaked-out my girls) but was not deep enough (I decided) to run to the emergency room for stitches. We went to the doctors the next day and the doc agreed with me. What we had done was use that glue type bandage you hear about on TV to keep it closed, then we put butterfly ones on top of that. It still hurts some and the swelling makes me look like a creature from Star Trek but I will be fine. It has just slowed me down a bit. I will tell you the letter for the day. It is the letter "N". Lori Hill ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ October 11, 2004 Kindergarten - MUSIC Class: We listened to three selections from Gustav Holst's "The Planets" and colored pictures of what the music made us think about. One song seemed angry like a battle, one was peaceful (some felt it was more sad), and one was very happy and playful. We talked about what made them think the music sounded that way and what the composer was trying to make us think about. Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com October 11, 2004 Kindergarten - SPANISH Class: Today, we began learning useful phrases like "open the door" and "shut the door." We also reviewed colors, numbers 0-10, and how to say our names and ask others what their name was. We also learned how to ask how to say something in Spanish. Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- October 4, 2004 Kindergarten - MUSIC Class: We went outside today and played music games. Each game used our three pitches mi, so, and la. Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com October 4, 2004 Kindergarten - SPANISH Class: Today was a fact finding mission to see just how much Spanish they remembered. At first, they had me wondering if they remembered anything other than hola, but by the end of class they had remembered several phrases and numbers. I have a slightly different approach to teaching Spanish than Mrs. Powell and I hope the change doesn't cause too much disruption. My basic premise is that young children can learn Spanish faster if it is associated with an object instead of a word. For example, I will point to a door and say "la puerta," but will not say "door is la puerta." We drew pictures of a rainbow to help me assess their memory of colors. Teacher: Lora A. Brown e-mail: amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com Our Kindergarten Day October 4, 2004 First Period - Science with Mrs. Powell They continued their study on parts of their bodies and the five senses. They had a science olympics using blocks and balls and each child received a gold medal when they completed the five tasks. They had a practice session using the dry bones for a 'Dem Bones' for parents after the 3 PM session. Second Period - Art with Mrs. Lisa Joyner (substitute) Our letter of the day was "R" so we made a mobile made up of a rain bow and the elements that make the rainbow -- rain drops and the sun. We talked about how rainbows are made and about the first rainbow. Third Period - Spanish and Music with Mrs. Lora Brown Her lesson is listed separately. Forth Period - Recess with Mrs. Lori Hill Fifth Period - The Letter of the Day / Story Time with Mrs. Lori Hill We first tried to think of words that started with the letter /r/. That seemed to be hard for them. Ryan was quick to note that his name started with the letter R! Our first worksheet was to recognize the letter R. Then we worked on a worksheet where they had to identify pictures that began with the letter /r/. Finally we finished with writing the letter /r/. I brought a crystal ball to class and let the sun shine through it which made lots of little rainbows that spotted both room and children. The children had fun trying to cover it only to make the rainbow shine on the back of their hands or bodies. I also had the children study the little rainbows and name the colors they saw. Twas fun! I read two story books again. The first one was Rumplestilskin (sp?) and the second one was Ruby the Copy Cat. At the end of that book we realized that Ruby was special on her own without having to be a copy cat. Sixth Period - Show and Tell / Snacks / Rest Time with Mrs. Lori Hill Show and Tell brought lots of /R/ words. We ended up having 3 rescue rangers but each was different from the others. The kids did a great job finding /R/ things for Show and Tell! Snacks were Fruit Roll-ups which the kids loved and they didn't even need drinks (thats nice!). Thank you Lisa Bell! After Show and Tell we had time to work on Rhyming. The kids are great at rhyming. We did a fun work sheet on ryming. The Rest Time movie was not Magic School Bus this time. Instead, I had them watch a movie on the very first rainbow. I have a great Noah and the Ark movie that kids always are glued to whenever I play it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9/27/04 Science - Ms. Powell We are continuing our study on Parts of the Body We Can See and Parts of the Body We Can’t See. We identified parts of the body with three hand outs which will be in their note books. Third Grade used a crossword puzzle for our study. We used our thumbs and ink pads for thumb-print art. We used real bones from Calhoun for our “Dem Bones” song. Important Announcement Next Monday at 3 o’clock Science classes K-3 will meet in the church foyer for a “Dem Bones” demonstration. Parents may come and watch. 9/27/04 All in a day in Kindergarten First Period - Science Wasn't able to connect with Mrs. Powell on her day Monday. Second Period - Art Cheryl taught the kids about different hues. How colors lighten by adding white. We put drops of a color of their choice and white on their paper plates then had them blow them around with straws. As the colors mixed together they lightened. To go with the letter of the day Cheryl also had the kids make Turtles. Third Period - Spanish Susan's notes on her class are listed separately but just in case she doesn't mention it, Monday was her last day with us. Spanish and Music are actually 20 minute classes. How we will adjust this, since Lora Brown has taught Spanish before, she will teach both Spanish and Music and we will put them both together for third period. Below this report is the new schedule which will take place this coming Monday. Lunch and Recess Forth Period - The letter of the Day The letter of the day was T which was an easy letter to write. We worked on recognizing and writing the letter. The letter next week will be the letter "R". Fifth Period - Story time / Show and Tell / Snacks Monday we read "The Giving Tree" and "Big Bird's Treasure Map". Show and Tell brought forth a lot of wonderful T words. Amanda brought a beautiful Totem Pole that she had made and Darius brought a picture of his little brother whose name begins with the letter T. Very original! For snacks, Meredith, James's mother, brought Tortilla Chips and a Tropical fruit drink. Thank you very much! Sixth Period - Music with Lora Brown / Rest Time I believe Lora is now writing her own notes for the day. For rest time we watched a Magic School Bus on Dinosaurs. Boy did that keep the boys attention! Have a great week! New Daily Schedule 9:00 - 9:10 Greeting, The Pledge of Allegiance and Prayer. 1st Period 9:10 -9:50 Science with Mrs. Kathleen Powell 2nd Period 9:55-10:45 Art Class with Mrs. Cheryl Carmack 3rd Period 10:50-11:40 Spanish and Music with Mrs. Lora Brown LUNCH 4th Period Note: The last half of the day will 12:10-1:00 Recess be in the order given but may not 5th Period follow those exact times. 1:05-1:55 Letter of the Day and Story Time 6th Period 2:00-3:00 Show and tell / Snacks / Rest Time August 27, 2004 Music – Kindergarten Class: We held class outside today and had great success with understanding tempo (the speed of music). We learned Largo (slow), Andante (a walking speed), Allegro (quick), and Vivace (very fast). Next week we will begin learning additional verses to our song for the November 8th concert. Teacher: Lora A. Brown amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9/20/04 Kindergarten - Music Class Activites: After singing "My Country 'Tis of Thee" in preparation for our November 8th concert, we played a variety of games that helped with beat, rhythm, pitch matching, and hearing in direction. We even got to go outside and play some of the singing games. We are planning to go outside next week if the weather permits as well. Lora A. Brown amadeusentertainment@yahoo.com 9/20/04 Mrs. Lori Hill's Kindergarten Class First Period - Science with Mrs. Kathleen Powell They are continuing their study of parts of their body. Using their eyes and hands they made a paper book mark that they dipped into shaving cream that had tempera paints swirled in it. Second Period - Art with Mrs. Cheryl Carmack The children worked more with the primary and secondary colors. They made pictures with each set of colors using foam geometric shapes. They were very creative! Third Period - Spanish with Ms. Susan Powell Described separately on this web sight. Lunch and Recess Fourth Period - The letter of the day with Mrs. Lori Hill The letter of the day was the letter "K". I'm so sorry I skipped this on my last report! We worked on how to write the letter and played the listening and following directions game with this letter. We went on to make Ka-Zoos which not only made the wax paper at the end of the tube vibrate but also the walls of the room! The kids had a lot of fun with them. Next weeks letter will be the letter "T". Fifth Period - Story time / show and tell / Snacks with Mrs. Lori HIll The story we read was "The King's Tooth Ache". In it we learned that long ago people didn't have a lot of things we take for granite these days... not even Kings. Don't we live so much better than the Kings and Queans of old? / Even though I forgot to tell you what the next letter of the day was, there we quite a few show and tells that started with the letter "k" like Kitten, Key, and Kangaroo to name a few! / Snacks were wonderful (thank you to Janelle Sterrett!). She brought Rice Krispy Treats and a Kiwi fruit drink. Clever! Jenny, our room mom, is coordinating the snacks for snack time. Please call her for your turn. If you can, try to have your snack start with the letter of the day. I realize that it is sometimes impossible given the letter you are stuck with and that is fine. Also, there is no need to bring a drink ( I will supply water) unless you can think of a drink that goes great with the letter of the day. Thanks for your help in this! Sixth Period - Music with Mrs. Lora Brown and Rest Time with the Magic School Bus I need to get from Lora what she does with the children during music. This is my break time and I slip out but when I have to step in for something I notice she always has the kids captivated with her music. She has quite a way with children! / During rest time we try to get all of the children's supplies gathered from the day. If you come early to pick up your child we can not guarantee that we will be successful in this. If you come to pick up your child early, try to remember everything your child brought to class so nothing is forgotten. Thank you and have a great week!! **REMINDER** Next week is Pizza week! If you want to take advantage of it please bring $3 for your child's lunch. Also I believe there is a one time fee of $5 a child (no more than $10 a family) for these lunches this school year. I hope I'm right about these amounts. Keep an eye on the BHSE emails for the reminder! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9/13/04 Kindergarten with Mrs. Hill Period 1 - Science I will talk to Mrs. Powell to see if she can enter what she does each day for science on this web page. By the time I leave the Algebra I class I teach during first period she is already gone and I am unable to ask her what she did. Period 2 - Art Class Mrs. Cheryl Carmack was out today because of some surgery she had done on her knee so I did the art this day. Because our letter of the day was "M" we made a Mosaic of the Moon. Period 3 - Spanish Described separately on this web page. Period 4 - LUNCH!! (a much anticipated class all the students enjoy! :-) Recess Period 5 - Story Time / Show and tell / Snacks I read 2 stories this day. "Bert's Mop Mix up" which was an interactive book with lots of 'M' words and "Sir Maggie the Mighty" which was a book about obedience. Ofcorse some of the kids brought a lot of wonderful things from home that starts with the letter 'M'. For snacks we ate some chocolate covered Marshmallow cookies, Yum Yum! Period 6 - Music Period 7 - Rest time with "The Magic School Bus" ATTENTION!! Our room mom, Jenny Mullin, has graciously agreed to coordinate the snacks for snack time. Please contact her by phone or email and let her know which week you would like to do. We like to match the letter of the day when it is possible. For example the first day was "f" and we ate fishies, the second week was "b" and we had sugar cookies with blue frosting. I know that some letters are not possible and that is fine. Jenny's phone number is 662-7717 and her email is jlfmullin@yahoo.com. 9/13/04 Elementary Spanish Today in Elementary Spanish, students began learning how to say color words. All students learned a song to help them memorize the words. Younger students did a color activity that focused on red and blue. Older students did a color activity for all words. The older students also played "musical maraca" to help reinforce the lesson. Next week we will continue with colors with the younger students and move on to numbers with the older ones. Susan Powell 8/30/04 Ms. Lori's Kindergarten Class First Period Science - Mrs. Kathleen Powell Mrs. Powell was not here on Monday. Sharon Matheny took the class for her. I haven't been able to get in touch with Sharon so I am unsure on what exactly they did. But according to what Mrs. Powell told me last week they are continuing their book on "All About Me" Second Period Art - Ms. Cheryl Carmack We continued on with the color wheel. With colored water, Cheryl mixed red and yellow in a glass and got orange and blue and green in another glass and got purple. After that we made a Bird feeder with a Beagle. What messy fun! Third Period Spanish - Mrs. Susan Powell Susan will give an account of her class on this web page. Lunch then Recess Forth Period Working with the letter of the day - Mrs. Lori Hill Boy there are a lot of words that start with the letter B ! The children named so many my dry erase board was full of pictures as I drew each Noun they called out. After we worked on writing the letter we played a listening and following directions game. I gave them a sheet of paper with pictures on it. They had to listen to me describe one of the pictures, identify the one I was describing, then follow directions on what I said to do to the picture. This seems to be a hard thing for the kids to do and they will get better at it as the year moves along. A few kids did great the first time. Wow! Fifth Period was Story time, Show-and-tell, and Snacks- with Mrs. Lori We read a story about Bozzle, Blizzy and Sleater the Cheater. In it we learned that it's not right to cheat and, when playing, everyone has a much better time when everyone plays fairly. Show-and- tell was a lot of fun. Most of the children had something to show. If the item itself didn't start with a B we had fun finding something about it that started with the letter B. Next week our letter is the letter M. If you can, have the kids try and find something to share that starts with the letter M. First half of Sixth Period is Music with Mrs. Lora Brown Lora has a beautiful voice and sings many songs with the kids. She's getting them also to listen to how their voice goes higher and lower when they sing. She has the kids take turns following the balls she has drawn on her dry-erase board with their finger as their voices go up and down through the song. Second half of Sixth Period - Quiet time with the Magic School Bus The Magic School Bus we watched was entitled, 'Kicking up a Storm'. It taught the children what all was involved in a thunder storm. 8/30/04 Spanish: Students in the elementary Spanish Program continued learning Spanish greetings on Monday, August 30th. Kindergarteners and Second through Fourth graders learned how to say Good Morning and Good Evening (Buenos Dias and Buenas Noches) and third and fourth graders also learned proper salutations for adults and teachers (i.e. Mr., Mrs., etc.) Just a reminder that there is a one time Spanish fee of $5 per student if you haven't already paid. If you have more than one child to pay fees for, please either pay in cash or write separate checks for the art and Spanish fees. This will make Ms. Brenda's job a lot easier! Thanks, Susan Powell. 8/30/04 Music Kindergarten: We had lots of fun today as we reviewed beat and rhythm. They already know the difference between high and low so we learned mi, so, and la. We also sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee" which we will be singing on November 8th. Here are the words if you are not familiar with the song: My country, ’tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims’ pride, From every mountainside, Let freedom ring! My native country, thee, Land of the noble free, Thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, Thy woods and templed hills; My heart with rapture thrills, Like that above. Let music swell the breeze, And ring from all the trees, Sweet freedom’s song; Let mortal tongues awake; Let all that breathe partake; Let rocks their silence break, The sound prolong. Our fathers’ God, to Thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing; Long may our land be bright With freedom’s holy light; Protect us by Thy might, Great God, our King. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Spanish: Aug. 23, 2004 Students in Elementary Spanish learned today how to say the following words/phrases: hello, goodbye, how are you, what is your name, good morning, good afternoon, good evening. The older students were given Spanish names. We began learning a Spanish greeting song as well. We learning by looking at the globe which countries in the world speak Spanish. We also discussed how God created all people but that some people speak different languages and have different customs. Mon., Aug. 23, 2004 Ms. Lori's Kindergarten Class First Period Science: Mrs. Kathleen Powell The children are starting a folder called "All About Me". So Mrs. Powell is keeping their papers and putting them in a folder. So they'll end up with a little booklet about themselves. Second Period Art: Mrs. Cheryl Carmack The children learned about the primary colors. Then they made flowers which both started with the letter of the day, "F", and held the primary colors. Third Period Spanish: Mrs. Susan Powell In Spanish class the kids learned how to greet their teacher and Ms. Powell (not the same as the Science teacher) brought in some Spanish items for them to look at and name. The following are some of the words they went over: Hello - Hola Goodbye - Adios Thank you - Gracias Please - Porfavor Good morning - Buenos Dias Susan would like everyone to give her a one time $5.00 fee for her class to cover the expenses of all the items she will have for the kids in class. For example, feeding the kids diff. foods when they learn them. Lunch: We chose to have lunch before recess because the kids were so hungry. Recess: We got rained out today and had to go inside to play. Forth Period: Our letter of the day was "f". We thought of words that started with the letter "f" and if it was a noun I would draw a picture of it on the dry erase board. We learned to identify the letter and when to use the upper case letter and when to use the lower case letter (which will be discussed every week). We also worked on forming the letter. Fifth Period: Was story time, show-and-tell, and snacks. We also sang some fun action songs to get their blood pumping. The story I read to them was called "Adam Raccoon and Forever Falls". It tells about why rules are often made and what can happen when we disobey them. We also read Dr. Seuss, "The Foot Book". Because a lot of the students had that book I had them read it with me which they enjoyed. For show-and-tell next week see if your child can find something that starts with the letter "B". If not, something else would be fine. For snacks next week we will be celebrating a Birthday. One of the mothers, (forgive me, in the commotion I forget which mother it was) said she would bring some cup cakes for her son's birthday. Sixth Period: Was Music with Ms. Lora Brown. She had a wonderful time with the kids. They learned about rhythm and beat. She handled the kids well with her songs and activities. During the second half of this last period we relaxed and watched a video. I apologize that I forgot Magic School Bus. I for sure will have it with me next week and the weeks to follow! ** NOTE FROM THE TEACHER ** ** After classes I went over the supplies and we don't need any more markers, crayons, scissors, or glue but we DO NEED water color paints. Thank you so much and have a GREAT WEEK! Spanish Class Mon., Aug. 23, 2004 Attention Parents of K, 2nd through 4th: There is a one time $5 fee for Spanish class. This fee is to cover materials to supplement lessons such as toy animals, play foods, and special culturally based art projects. I use many games and hands on activities to teach Spanish to young children so this fee is necessary to make their learning experience complete. Please put the fee in an envelope with the words "Spanish Fee" and my name, Susan Powell on the front. I will take up the money and turn it in to Brenda who will in turn reimburse me for my purchases. In addition to the fee, please provide your student (2nd through 4th only) with one folder with brads ($.25) and one pkg. of 3" by 5" index cards for flash cards. Thank you Susan Powell susan@thespinshop.com |
